The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport and agreed to close the petition in light of the ongoing discussions between the Welsh Government and Tata Steel, the funding announced for improvements to the power plant, and the likelihood that there is little further concrete action that the Petitions Committee can take.  

The Committee considered further comments from the petitioner and agreed to write to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport to ask for an update on discussions with Tata Steel about a package of support in relation to the power plant at the steel works.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure and agreed to await the views of the petitioner on the latest information before considering closing the petition, in light of the information received and further funding committed by the Welsh Government in the draft budget for 2018-19.

The Committee considered correspondence from the petitioner and agreed to write to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure to ask if there have been any recent discussions involving the Welsh Government over a new power plant at Port Talbot, before considering what further action the Committee could take.

Due to time constraints the petition was deferred to the meeting on 19 September.

The Committee considered correspondence on the petition and given the ongoing work on this issue, and the recent attention of another Committee, agreed to keep a watching brief. 

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and, given that the then Enterprise and Business Committee met to consider the issues around TATA Steel at the end of the 4^th Assembly, agreed to ask the new Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee whether it plans to consider the issue further and if so, whether they would include the issues raised by the petition as part of that consideration.
